He then undertook post-doctoral research in the Department of Medicine, Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. He then went on to undertake research into the cellular and molecular processes involved in physical trauma induced neurodegeneration at the Institute of Neurological Science, University of Texas, USA. Whilst in the USA Steve worked with John Leeii and the late Dan Jonesiii in the exploration of Men’s issues surrounding attachment, anger, emotional classification and differentiation and the expression of emotions in positive and non-stress creating processesiv. Coupled with this period in the USA he explored various east-west philosophies, approaches to holistic health and psychotherapy. He subsequently adopted an integrative systems-based focus on the underlying bases of psychological processes and behaviours. During past 30 years he has been studying the biological basis of behaviour, and in particular, the effect of stress upon the development of psychological trauma. He also looks at evidence-based research connecting stress and neuro-inflammationv. Most recently his interest has been in the field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) including the connection between Stress-Brain-Gut Axis that is involved in anxiety, depression and trauma-related behaviour.vi Over this period Steve developed a model of the root causes of behaviourvii. The model focusses upon understanding the ethological, neurobiological and psychological basis of behaviourviii. The model is derived from the work, primarily, from Drs Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, Janina Fisher and Bessel Van Der Kolk ix. Recently, both Dr John Arden and Professor Peter Kindermann have synthesized much of this work into a psychosocial model of mental health that integrate biological, social and cultural impacts upon the psychological processes that underlie mental health.x In particular, Dr Arden, is an advocate of the use of learning about the brain and its role in manifestation of behaviour. By introducing new learning, which bring about changes in the brain, this results in concomitant changes in behaviour. Thus, through utilizing the brain’s inherent ability (“neuroplasticity”xi) to form new neural connections new behaviours arise. Using the aforementioned models, Steve provides information, learning-opportunities and implementation strategies and tactics in a practical and user-friendly manner to assist in facilitating behaviour change and personal growth. He uses a range of therapeutic interventions. These interventions are developed and applied using techniques and tools to build “Keystone” linksxii.
