The Biology of Attachment and Neurodevelopment:
The Rise and Impact of Insecure Attachment
It’s the reason why there are alarming statistics that despite our advancements in technology, 1 in 6 children are officially diagnosed with a mental health disorder. 30 percent of our children currently could be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
Â
The biology of attachment and neurodevelopment is one reason why autoimmunity collectively affects 23.5 million Americans, a prevalence higher than the combined prevalence of cancer and heart disease. And that is just one health condition connected with our attachment.
Â
Attachment is where I started my journey into understanding trauma and what to do. I fostered and then adopted while in medical school, bringing attachment trauma right into my home. However, I also grew up with attachment pain without knowing. My father was adopted. I did not understand how much of his unspoken pain I had absorbed. Having no helpful outlet, his attachment pain had become his health and relationship patterns that never changed.
Â
This is very personal for me and yet professionally, I see attachment as one of the most important topics missing in medicine. This saddens me every time I see the statistics and trends of autoimmunity and its continued rise. It’s what inspires me to do what I can to teach and share what I have learned! Yes, autoimmunity is one of those conditions I have been able to reverse.
What I have seen over the years, is for those with an insecure attachment, it creates confusion, struggles and anxiety we can’t often put our finger on why. It often becomes one’s biggest pain in life and something that they never rise above or change.
Â
I want to teach you what I have learned. The lessons from my personal experiences, from my patients as a preventive and addiction medicine physician, and now from my course members are ones that can help you. I want you to have the knowledge and tools so that you can create a different ending to your story.
