Hi, I’m Jodi Cohen, nutritional therapist and founder of Vibrant Blue Oils.
I know that being unable to pinpoint what’s wrong with your health when you’re experiencing debilitating symptoms can be a nightmare.
I know because I’ve been there and so have thousands of my customers.
Years ago, I was struggling with a flood of health issues that I couldn’t shake regardless of what I tried.
Blood sugar swings, exhaustion, intense brain fog, forgetfulness, inflammation issues and a general feeling of being unwell plagued me.
Getting through the day was nearly impossible and even simple tasks like answering the phone or doing the laundry felt completely overwhelming.
Can you relate?
Despite trying every wellness hack I could think of, including restrictive diets that were exhausting to implement and sustain, loads of expensive supplements and all sorts of therapies, I still found myself anxious, depressed and unable to function.
I felt like I was constantly treading water, barely staying afloat, but not really improving.
In other words, common wellness protocols kept me from drowning, but never pulled me out of the deep water.
At one point, things had gotten so bad that I was actually googling dementia symptoms to figure out if I was at the early stages of Alzheimer’s.
My luck turned around on the day I picked up a copy of Dr. Mark Hyman’s “The UltraMind Solution”.
In the book, Hyman introduced me to the topic of vagus nerve stimulation and stressed how vital it is to one’s overall health. He said that by stimulating the vagus nerve with deep belly breathing, a person is able to shut off the body’s stress response, turn down the fires of inflammation and regulate the immune system.

In case you aren’t familiar with the vagus nerve, it’s the longest and most complex cranial nerve in your body that’s made up of thousands of sensory fibers.
It travels between your brain and almost every organ in your body and allows for vital back and forth communication.
It’s responsible for the regulation of internal organ function and tells the brain what’s happening in your vital organs, including your stomach, intestines, lungs, heart, spleen, liver and kidneys.
It also regulates the parasympathetic “rest, digest and heal” state of our nervous system and helps calm the body after the “fight or flight” response is triggered.
I was intrigued with Hyman’s theory so I decided to research further.
What I found is that if the vagus nerve isn’t functioning as intended due to low vagal tone, an infection, toxicity or something else happening inside your body, a traffic jam builds up and vital information can’t be communicated back and forth between your brain and your organs.
This is where numerous health problems arise, and where the importance of vagus nerve stimulation comes into play.
As it turns out, a handful of researchers had already started to explore a more invasive form of vagus nerve stimulation as a cure for certain health ailments like depression and epilepsy, yet it wasn’t exactly public knowledge yet.
With this more invasive method, vagus nerve stimulation devices are surgically implanted under the skin on the chest.
When activated, the device sends electrical signals along the left vagus nerve to your brain stem, which then sends signals to certain areas in your brain.
I also found that a few other noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation devices, which don’t require surgical implantation, were being used in Europe treat epilepsy, depression and pain, and yet another device was approved by in the United States for the treatment of cluster headaches.
The majority of the studies were very promising.
In one study published in Biological Psychiatry in 2005, 124 people received usual treatment for depression and 205 people received usual treatment plus vagus nerve stimulation.
After one year of treatment, the combination treatment group showed more improvement than the usual treatment group.
Significant improvement was seen in 27% of patients that received vagus nerve stimulation versus 13% that did not.
As I dug through the research, I started to ask myself – could vagus nerve stimulation help me feel better?
Was it the missing link in my wellness plan?
I wasn’t quite sure, but I was determined to find out.
To naturally stimulate the vagus nerve without having to worry about getting a device implanted, Hyman recommended a natural and non-invasive soft-belly breathing technique.
Unfortunately, with my failing memory, my compliance with this method was marginal at best.
Regardless of how hard I tried, I could never remember and prioritize the breathing technique.
As the months passed, the universe kept trying to remind me of the vagus nerve and its need for stimulation.
I vividly recall the day my favorite yoga instructor had us feel behind our earlobe on the mastoid bone as we practiced our deep breathing.
She echoed Hyman’s theory that deep yoga breathing could stimulate the vagus nerve and trigger the “rest, digest and heal” parasympathetic state in which all healing occurs.
At this point, I knew VNS was key to my recovery, but all of the recommended methods for stimulating the vagus nerve didn’t feel sustainable.
It was around this time that essential oils entered my life and I began aggressively researching all potential uses.
In passing, a colleague mentioned that since essential oils are fat-soluble and the brain is primarily composed of fat, essential oils had the power to deliver the right remedy to the right region of the brain when needed.
The light bulb immediately went off!
I knew there had to be a particular combination of essential oils that could stimulate the vagus nerve upon topical application.
I began my search for the perfect blend of essential oils to stimulate the vagus nerve.
This included testing different stimulatory blends on the vagus nerve and evaluating its impact on the different organs.
To test the effectiveness of each blend, different neuro lymphatic points associated with the organs of digestion were palpated and the intensity of the palpation noted on a scale of 1 – 10.
Different essential oil blends were then applied on the vagus nerve (behind the ear on the mastoid bone) and the points were re-palpated.
The current Parasympathetic® formula consistently reduced the intensity of the palpations, in some cases from a level of 10 down to zero.
It contains a very specific ratio of Clove oil, which is highly stimulatory, and Lime oil, which has super small molecules, in a base of fractionated coconut oil.
